Mar 19, 2019 IBM Blockchain World Wire is the new financial rail built on top of Stellar Lumens blockchain that simultaneously clears and settles cross-border payments in near real-time. The primary goal of this product is optimizing and quickening foreign exchange, cross-border payments, and remittances — which has long been one of blockchain technology’s promises. Stellar (XLM) Entry Global Payments Market. With the increased demand for fast payments across the globe, IBM spotted Stellar to come up with a system that will make the dream come true. This has seen the birth of Blockchain World Wire (BWW) payment system which is as a result of the corporation between the tech giant and the blockchain outfit.

Are you being deliberately facetious?' Two financial institutions transacting together agree to use a stable coin, central bank digital currency or other digital asset as the bridge asset between any two fiat currencies. The digital asset facilitates the trade and supplies important settlement instructions.'
Other digital asset'. The fact that financial institutions and central banks are being onboarded is the biggest news in crypto. XLM is the only trustless digital asset on the network, and will be used as an intermediatary bridge for all relevant trading pairs and provides key network liquidity.Just because it's not explicitly stated that they're using XLM doesn't magically change how the Stellar protocol and XLM were designed. That this apparent lack of declaration for XLM is your biggest contention demonstrates a clear lack of apprehension towards the major success of this announcement. Most times they will chose the stable coin over a more volatile asset. In the future XLM may stabilise, which would negate this.Even if every bank decided to use a stable coin, the eventual order book on the Stellar network, with millions of different sorts of assets, will need an intermediary bridge asset to provide enough liquidity. That's where XLM really shines.
It's trustless too (it doesn't need an Anchor, and can't be forged so doesn't require auditing). So think of 100bn XLM having to be everywhere at once, 24/7. It's not going to happen, right? That pushes up utility value.Don't forget pathfinding, where XLM can even be used without 'meaning' too (i.e. It's an automatic transaction + conversion of up to 6 swaps). So $-£ can end up $-£ even if the sender doesn't specificy, if that transaction is cheaper. Hat I was trying to get at.
I will never sell my lumens. He was asking if it clearly stated Stellar as the bridging asset, no it doesn’t but put 2 and 2 together.IBM using the Stellar protocol for this gives me the warm and fuzzies. It can be used as'a bridge asset but so can other assets on the chain for that matter. When this finally takes off and is used by the masses let alone institutions I do not think it will matter much more if it is used as bridge asset or not as Lumens will always be needed to make transactions.
Even if this amount is close to nothing. This is the snowball effect which will occur in due time. Anyone happen to know how many transactions are made on the NYSE stock exchange in one day? About 10m, What about how many debit or credit card transactions etc. So in case they are using XLM as bridge asset, does that mean there has to be market makers (exchanges etc) in every respective corridors providing FIAT/XLM (XLM/FIAT) pairs? Wouldn’t that mean XLM needs a lot more of FIAT pairs for every different FIAT-currency where it’s going to be used as bridge asset?Does anyone know how many market makers are currently offering FIAT/XLM Pairs globally?
How much of infrastructure is laid for XLM in case of liquidity in those payment corridors? As much as I understand, they are going to use other digital assets for those corridors where there is no entry/exit point from XLM to FIAT or FIAT to XLM – could someone provide some infos on this? Thanks very muchEDIT: in case for downvoting me, i'm just looking for answers - didn't find any on the forum!. I agree that liquidity is definitely a problem today.
One of the coming solutions is the incentives StellarX is giving market makers when their exchange goes live. StellarX is basically the front end of the Stellar Network's distributed exchange.
Their website says they'll be giving away 100k XLM to market makers each week. The Stellar Network itself also uses what they call pathfinding which allows for up to 6 'hops.' This basically means you don't need direct pair between what you have and what you want. If you have XLM and want FIAT A, your order can be filled by going through other tokens on the network and it would look like XLM - Token V - Token W - Token X - Token Y - Token Z - FIAT A (tokens being CBDCs or other assets on the network). The network will automatically find the cheapest path to get what you're asking for. This means you don't need a ton of liquidity in every corridor, you just need more people on the network which is happening as we speak.
IBM recently announced that its blockchain-based global payments network is live in limited production, stating the new payment rail settles cross-border payments in near real-time.To accomplish this feat, World Wire uses the Stellar protocol, an open-source, decentralized protocol for digital currency to fiat currency transfer, and competitor to the digital asset XRP and the software company Ripple. Settlement will be supported using Stellar Lumens (XLM) and the stable coin “Stronghold USD” (backed 1-to-1 to the USD) by leveraging IBM’s existing partnership with Stronghold.Pending regulatory approvals, six international banks, including Banco Bradesco, Bank Busan, and Rizal Commercial Banking Corporation (RCBC), have signed letters of intent to issue their own stable coins on World Wire. If successful, we can anticipate the addition of the euro, Korean won, Brazilian real, Indonesian rupiah, and Philippine peso stable coins to the network.According to IBM, World Wire has enabled payment locations in 72 countries, with 47 currencies and 44 banking endpoints.XLM cannot be IBM’s “Golden Goose”Liquidity is critical to World Wire success for IBM. It’s simple – without liquidity, no matter the settlement asset (digital asset or fiat), transactions cannot be completed. Currently, XLM liquidity cannot “answer the call” to support high-volume levels that IBM will surely want to capture.
Fiat pairings are a strong indicator of liquidity and XLM is just not there yet; with the bulk of XLM liquidity coming from alt coin pairings – likely requiring at least one additional asset to be involved in the transaction for XLM/Fiat conversion.IBM will have to entertain other settlement assets that will provide efficient, friction-less, and cost-effective transactions – queue XRP, right? Well, not right now.
IBM appears to be entertaining stable coins issued by banks to sidestep fiat pairings, but will that work?Stable Coins aren’t the answerStablecoins may work well within the bank’s walled garden but doesn’t solve many of the existing problems within this space including liquidity, trust, and friction-less settlement. It’s great that IBM is moving forward with blockchain and near real-time settlement but stable coins are not the answer. At least one of three things will need to happen for stable coins to flourish on World Wire – 1) Customers will create their own stable coin, 2) Trust and adopt another customer’s stable coin, or, 3) Adopt a bridge currency with a high-level of liquidity with both fiat and cryptocurrencies. Which of these options do you think customers are going to choose?Reality Check for IBM World WireIBM World Wire has stated that they will explore a variety of digital assets. This is a MUST if IBM wants to identify the best bridge settlement asset for World Wire.
The dominant settlement mechanism will rise to the top as IBM adjusts accordingly to the landscape and the World Wire platform gains market share – and we all know which digital asset that will be: XRP.You May Also Like.
